The most prominent advantages of PP Honeycomb can be summarized into five aspects: “Light,” “Strong,” “Resistant,” “Stable,” and “Green.”
- Exceptional Lightweight and High Specific Strength (Light & Strong): This is its core competitive edge. The honeycomb structure is a mechanically highly efficient design. It distributes material where stress is highest, creating air pockets in between, thereby providing extremely high in-plane compressive and flexural stiffness at a very low weight (density typically ranges from 30-150 kg/m³). Its specific strength (strength-to-weight ratio) far exceeds that of solid PP sheets, wood, and even surpasses some metals.
- Superior Energy Absorption and Impact Resistance (Strong): Upon impact, the cell walls of the honeycomb structure absorb and dissipate significant energy through progressive buckling and folding, rather than sudden fracture. This gives sandwich panels made with it excellent cushioning and crashworthiness, widely used in automotive impact protection and protective packaging.
- Outstanding Chemical Corrosion Resistance and Waterproofness (Resistant): Benefiting from the intrinsic properties of PP, the honeycomb core is completely non-absorbent, moisture-proof, salt-spray resistant, and resistant to most chemicals. It does not rot, mold, or harbor bacteria, ensuring a long service life, especially suitable for marine and chemical environments.
- Good Thermal Insulation, Sound Insulation, and Dimensional Stability (Stable): The sealed honeycomb cells are filled with static air, which is an excellent insulator for both heat and sound. Therefore, PP honeycomb sandwich panels offer good thermal insulation and noise reduction. Additionally, PP has very low moisture absorption and a controllable coefficient of thermal expansion, resulting in good dimensional stability.
- Environmentally Friendly and Easy to Process (Green): The material is 100% recyclable. It is very easy to work with; it can be cut, drilled, and sanded using common woodworking tools and can be bonded or thermoformed with various face sheets, enabling high production efficiency.
