What are composite core materials?

Composite core materials are lightweight structural materials used as the middle layer in sandwich structures. These materials are placed between two strong outer skins—typically fiberglass, carbon fiber, aluminum, or steel—to create a panel that is both strong and lightweight.

Common composite core materials include foam cores such as PVC foam, PET foam, PMI foam, and PU foam, as well as honeycomb cores like polypropylene honeycomb and aluminum honeycomb. Each type of core material is designed to provide specific mechanical properties such as high stiffness, compression resistance, and low density.

The main purpose of composite core materials is to increase the structural efficiency of a panel without significantly adding weight. By separating the outer skins and stabilizing them, the core improves bending stiffness and load distribution.

Composite core materials are widely used in industries such as wind energy, marine construction, aerospace, transportation, and industrial panels where high strength-to-weight performance is essential.
