What is “Scrim” backing on foam core rolls, and do I need it?

Scrim is a thin layer of fiberglass mesh or non-woven polyester thermally bonded to the surface of the foam.

  • Do you need it? Yes, if you are using Vacuum Infusion or Hand Layup. The scrim acts as a resin flow medium and mechanical key, dramatically improving the peel strength between the core and the fiberglass skin. It also prevents the foam from cracking when you bend it around a tight radius.
