XPS Foam Composite Core can be considered for certain FRP sandwich panel applications, but its suitability should be verified according to the FRP skin material, resin system, adhesive, manufacturing process, and service environment.
In an FRP sandwich panel, the XPS Foam Composite Core is positioned between FRP face sheets to create a lightweight composite structure. The core increases the structural thickness and supports the skins, while the FRP face sheets provide the primary tensile and compressive strength.
One important consideration is resin and adhesive compatibility. Different resin systems and bonding materials can interact differently with XPS foam. Therefore, manufacturers should conduct compatibility and bonding tests before mass production rather than assuming that every resin system is suitable.
Production conditions must also be considered. Vacuum bagging, compression bonding, and other composite manufacturing processes may expose the core to pressure or temperature. The selected XPS Foam Composite Core should be able to withstand the actual production conditions.
For structural FRP components, it is recommended to evaluate compressive strength, shear strength, skin-to-core bond strength, and final sandwich-panel bending performance. Prototype testing provides a more reliable basis for material selection than evaluating the foam core alone.
