PET is inherently self-extinguishing with a Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) of approximately 25-27%, which is significantly better than PU and EPS. Through modification with halogen-free, intumescent flame retardants, specialized PET foam cores can achieve a fire classification of B1 (DIN 4102), B-s1,d0 (EN 13501-1), or Class A / Class 1 (ASTM E84 / BS 476). These classifications confirm that the material is difficult to ignite, produces very low smoke (s1), and generates no flaming droplets (d0). This robust fire inhibition capability effectively suppresses flame spread, buying critical time for safe evacuation and meeting the strictest fire safety codes for high-rises and public buildings.
