Lightweight XPS Core can reduce the overall weight of composite panels by replacing a portion of the solid material with a low-density foam core while maintaining a relatively large structural thickness.

For example, if a solid panel needs to become thicker to achieve greater stiffness, the additional solid material can significantly increase the weight. By using a lightweight XPS core between two thin face sheets, manufacturers can create a sandwich structure with greater thickness but much less material mass.

The face sheets carry the primary tensile and compressive stresses, while the Lightweight XPS Core supports the skins, maintains their spacing, and carries part of the shear and compression loads.

However, the lowest-density core is not always the best option. If the core density is too low, it may not provide adequate compressive or shear performance.
