How can you determine whether your XPS foam core was produced with CO₂ blowing or fluorocarbon blowing?

The EU and China have banned HCFC-141b as a blowing agent, but some illegal use may still exist. Identification methods: 1) Odor – fluorocarbon-blown XPS has a slight ether smell, CO₂-blown is odorless; 2) Density distribution – CO₂-blown has finer, more uniform cells (deviation <±3%), fluorocarbon-blown shows larger cells and density fluctuations; 3) Thermal stability – newly produced CO₂-blown XPS has thermal conductivity ~0.030 W/(m·K), but CO₂ diffuses quickly, rising to 0.034–0.036 after six months; fluorocarbon-blown has lower initial thermal conductivity (0.026) but slower increase over time due to lower gas diffusivity; 4) Request blowing agent MSDS documentation from the supplier. Environmentally, CO₂ or cyclopentane blown products should be chosen.
