XPS is favored for its excellent workability.
- For Construction: Large boards are easily cut on-site using a fine-tooth handsaw, a utility knife with a stiff blade (score and snap for thinner sheets), or a hot wire cutter. For precise cuts or creating channels, electric saws (table saw, circular saw) work well but create significant static-charged dust.
- For Modeling and Sculpting: A hot wire cutter is the ideal tool for smooth, precise, and dust-free cuts. It melts through the foam cleanly. For shaping, coarse and fine-grit sanding blocks, rasps, and even heated shaping tools can be used. Always cut in a well-ventilated area and wear a dust mask, especially when power sanding or sawing.
