How Is XPS Board Core Different From a Standard XPS Board?

XPS Board Core and standard XPS insulation boards may be based on similar extruded polystyrene technology, but their intended applications and technical requirements can be different.

Standard XPS boards are commonly designed for thermal insulation and building applications. XPS Board Core, on the other hand, is typically specified for use inside composite panels or sandwich structures. Therefore, factors such as density, mechanical performance, surface condition, dimensional accuracy, and adhesive compatibility may receive greater attention.

When used as a core, the XPS Board Core is normally bonded to two outer skins, such as FRP, aluminum, fiberglass, or decorative panels. In this configuration, the core must provide stable support while maintaining accurate thickness and dimensions.

Large composite panels are particularly sensitive to dimensional variation. If the core thickness or flatness is inconsistent, it may create gaps, uneven bonding, or panel deformation during production.

Therefore, buyers should not select a core solely according to general insulation-board specifications. They should clearly communicate that the material is intended for composite or sandwich-panel production and confirm the required mechanical and processing specifications with the supplier.
