When selecting an XPS Structural Foam Core, the first step is to determine the type of load that the final structure will experience. Compression, shear, bending, impact, and local loading can place different requirements on the core material.

Density is an important specification because it generally has a strong relationship with mechanical performance and weight. However, selecting the highest-density material is not always the most economical or structurally efficient solution. The optimal density should be determined according to the actual design requirements.

Core thickness is equally important. Increasing the thickness of an XPS Structural Foam Core can increase the overall structural depth and improve bending stiffness. In many lightweight designs, optimizing core thickness can be more effective than simply increasing the thickness of the outer skins.

Environmental conditions should also be considered. For applications exposed to moisture, temperature changes, or demanding service environments, buyers should evaluate water absorption, dimensional stability, thermal conductivity, and long-term performance.

Adhesive compatibility is another key factor. If the XPS Structural Foam Core will be bonded to FRP, aluminum, fiberglass, or other skins, the bonding system should be tested before production.

For CNC machining, grooving, cutting, or complex shapes, the material’s processing characteristics and dimensional tolerances should also be confirmed with the supplier.
