What Is an XPS Core Sheet and How Is It Used in Sandwich Structures?

An XPS Core Sheet is a sheet-form XPS foam material manufactured through an extrusion process and supplied in specific thicknesses and dimensions. It is commonly used as the internal core layer of sandwich panels and composite structures.

In a typical sandwich panel, the XPS Core Sheet is positioned between two outer skins. These skins may be made from FRP, fiberglass-reinforced plastic, aluminum, carbon fiber, steel, or other composite materials. The core is bonded to the skins using a suitable adhesive system to create an integrated sandwich structure.

The main purpose of an XPS Core Sheet is to maintain the spacing between the outer skins and provide internal support. By increasing the overall thickness of the panel without using a fully solid material, the sandwich structure can achieve improved bending stiffness while maintaining relatively low weight.

XPS Core Sheets can also be customized through cutting, grooving, machining, or other processing methods. This makes them suitable for both flat panels and certain shaped composite components.

When purchasing XPS Core Sheet products, buyers should confirm the required thickness, density, dimensions, thickness tolerance, compressive strength, thermal performance, water absorption, and surface condition. For automated production, dimensional accuracy and consistency are especially important because they directly affect processing efficiency and final panel quality.
