What is rigid foam board and how does it work as an insulation material?

Rigid foam board is a type of solid insulation panel manufactured from polymer-based foam materials such as EPS (expanded polystyrene), XPS (extruded polystyrene), or PIR (polyisocyanurate). These materials contain millions of tiny air cells that trap air and significantly reduce heat transfer through building structures. Because of its high thermal resistance and stable structure, rigid foam board is widely used in wall insulation systems, roofing assemblies, foundation insulation, and sandwich panels. Compared with traditional insulation materials such as fiberglass or mineral wool, rigid foam board provides higher insulation performance per inch and better moisture resistance. As a result, it has become a preferred insulation material in modern energy-efficient buildings.
