What Is XPS Foam Core and What Are Its Main Advantages?

XPS Foam Core is a closed-cell foam core material manufactured from extruded polystyrene (XPS). It is widely used in sandwich structures, composite panels, lightweight structural components, and applications where low weight, moisture resistance, thermal insulation, and dimensional stability are important.

The primary function of XPS Foam Core in a composite structure is not to carry the entire structural load independently, but to increase the overall structural thickness and provide support between the outer skins. In a typical sandwich structure, the face sheets carry most of the tensile and compressive loads, while the foam core maintains the distance between the skins and carries part of the shear and compression loads. This structural design can significantly improve bending stiffness without adding excessive weight.
