The rule of thumb for Flexural Stiffness is cubic. To double the bending stiffness of a solid plate, you must double its thickness, which doubles the weight. To double the bending stiffness of a sandwich panel, you slightly increase the core thickness while keeping skin weight the same. The weight increase is often only 5-10% compared to 100% for a solid. For example, a 25mm thick steel plate replaced by a 25mm Foam Core + 1mm Steel Skin laminate can be 80% lighter for the same load-bearing capacity.
