Marine structures operate in extremely humid and wet environments. If a core material absorbs excessive water, several problems may occur:
- Increased structural weight
- Reduced mechanical strength
- Delamination
- Freeze-thaw damage
- Long-term structural degradation
Closed-cell foam cores such as PVC, PET, and SAN are preferred because they minimize water penetration and maintain long-term performance.
