Can XPS Reinforcement Core Be Used to Strengthen Composite Panels?

XPS Reinforcement Core can be used to improve the structural efficiency of composite panels, but it does not normally strengthen a panel simply by acting as a high-strength layer. Instead, its primary function is to create a sandwich structure that increases the effective structural thickness.

For example, an XPS Reinforcement Core can be positioned between two FRP or aluminum skins. The outer skins carry most of the tensile and compressive loads, while the XPS core maintains the distance between the skins and provides internal support. This configuration can improve bending stiffness without adding the weight of a fully solid panel.

The density and thickness of the core must be properly selected. If the core is too soft, it may not provide sufficient support to the face sheets. If it is unnecessarily dense, the final structure may become heavier and more expensive.

Bonding quality is equally important. Even when the XPS core has sufficient mechanical strength, poor adhesion between the core and skins can lead to delamination or structural failure.

For load-bearing applications, manufacturers should evaluate the complete sandwich structure through compression, shear, bending, and skin-to-core adhesion testing. The final performance depends on the core, face sheets, adhesive, geometry, and manufacturing process working together.
