What Is XPS Structural Core and How Does It Work in a Sandwich Structure?

XPS Structural Core is an XPS foam core material designed for use inside sandwich structures and lightweight composite panels. Its main functions are to support the face sheets, maintain the distance between them, increase structural depth, and contribute to the overall bending performance of the panel.

In a typical sandwich structure, the upper and lower face sheets carry most of the tensile and compressive stresses. The XPS Structural Core maintains the spacing between these skins and carries part of the shear and compression loads.

This structural arrangement allows manufacturers to achieve greater stiffness with less weight than many solid-material designs. The performance of the sandwich panel depends on several factors, including core density, core thickness, face-sheet strength, adhesive strength, panel dimensions, and manufacturing quality.

For non-load-bearing applications, buyers may place greater emphasis on weight, cost, thermal performance, and processing characteristics. For structural applications, compression strength, shear strength, dimensional stability, and skin-to-core bonding become much more important.

XPS Structural Core can generally be cut, shaped, grooved, or machined according to the product design. However, demanding structural applications should be validated through appropriate material and finished-product testing before commercial production.
