What Is Extruded Polystyrene Foam Core and Why Is It Used as a Composite Core?

Extruded Polystyrene Foam Core is a closed-cell foam core material manufactured using an extrusion process. Its relatively uniform cellular structure provides a combination of low weight, moisture resistance, thermal insulation, and mechanical support.

When used in composite structures, Extruded Polystyrene Foam Core primarily performs the function of a lightweight core rather than acting as a completely independent structural material. It can be bonded with FRP, fiberglass, aluminum, carbon fiber, and other face-sheet materials to form sandwich panels.

The basic principle is to use the face sheets to carry the primary tensile and compressive stresses while the XPS core increases the structural depth and provides support between the skins. This allows manufacturers to achieve a useful balance between stiffness and weight.

The actual performance of Extruded Polystyrene Foam Core depends on density, thickness, cell structure, manufacturing process, and surface condition. Therefore, buyers should request technical specifications such as density, compressive strength, thermal conductivity, water absorption, thickness range, and dimensional tolerance.

For new composite applications, compatibility testing with the selected adhesive or resin system is also recommended before large-scale production.
