Balsa core material for composites is a lightweight structural core manufactured from selected balsa wood and used between two high-strength face sheets, such as fiberglass, carbon fiber, or other reinforced laminates. In a sandwich composite structure, the core increases the distance between the skins, allowing the panel to achieve higher bending stiffness without significantly increasing weight.

Unlike synthetic foam cores, balsa is a natural cellular material with a unique wood grain structure. The fibers are generally oriented perpendicular to the panel surface so that the core can provide high compressive strength and good shear performance.
